Kalevi Aho: Mearra – Chamber concerto for harp and strings

06.02.2026

In July and August 2016 Kalevi Aho worked for two and a half weeks in the former house of the Sámi artist Nils-Aslak Valkeapää (1943–2001) in Lássagámmi in Yykeänperä (Skibotn), which currently serves as an artist’s residence. The 20-minute chamber concerto for harp and strings, Mearra was created for the most part there, on the shores of an Arctic fjord, and the musical language can be traced to influences from the surrounding northern nature. The work has three parts, all of which have Sámi names: Eanan (Earth), Dolla (Fire) and Mearra (Sea). Buy now
